Steel or aluminium? Drivers for steel.

Galvanized steel is a time-proved and well-known material.  Aluminium is a modern light material, but fastidious at the same time. If facade subsystems of aluminium alloy are used, a number of requirements placed by aluminium should be strictly followed.

Steel has a lower heat expansion factor as compared to aluminium. In case of a temperature drop from – 20 °C to + 50 °C, a three-meter steel guide extends by 2 mm, while an aluminium guide extends by 5–6 mm. For this reason, aluminium systems provide for a number of movable connections and thermal joints. All connections in steel systems are fixed and they are simpler, and more reliable. System elements are exposed to elastic strains.
All brackets in steel systems are load-bearing. This allows distributing uniformly the lining weight over all the brackets on the guide (on an array of brackets in a double-circuit system). All connection points are fixed and are made of pop rivets or self-tapping screws.
It is worth reminding that brackets in aluminium facade systems are divided compulsorily into load-bearing and wind ones. In addition, the entire weight of the three-meter lined guide must have one load-bearing bracket, while the others only carry wind loads. To make a movable connection of the guide to the wind bracket, the latter has elongated openings. For this purpose, pop rivets (but not self-tapping screws) must be used. Moreover, a rivet fixation point in aluminium systems must change depending on the ambient temperature at site.
The load-bearing capacity of steel is 2.5 times more than that of aluminium.  The strength of aluminium alloy AD 31 is 20 kg/mm2 against 54 kg/mm2 for steel.  Thus, steel systems use parts that are twice thinner than parts in aluminium systems. This allows reducing the structure weight.

Fireproof steel facades. The melting temperature of steel is 1,800 °C. The melting temperature of pressed aluminium is 600–700 °C. The tests showed that the temperature may reach 900 °C in case of fire in individual facade areas, and result in aluminium melting. To avoid this, aluminium systems should be completed with fire barriers. However, this makes ventilated aluminium facades more expensive.

The thermal conductivity of steel is 4 times less than that of aluminium.  The thermal conductivity of aluminium is 220 W/(m°C); the thermal conductivity of stainless steel and galvanized steel is 40 and 45 W/(m°C), respectively. So, brackets in aluminium systems of ventilated facades represent large cold bridges. To eliminate any possibility of cold bridge formation in locations of bracket fixation to a wall, steel systems and aluminium systems use thermal breaks 2 mm and 10 mm thick, respectively, and this has an adverse effect on the reliability of the bracket – wall connection.

Cost of the steel facade system is critical for a client. Facade systems of galvanized steel are a good compromise between price and quality. A steel double-circuit attachment system of the ventilated facade is cheaper than that of an aluminium single-circuit one at the very beginning, in terms of a blind wall.
